Scott Newton is Reader in Laws of Central Asia at SOAS University of London.

Newton specialised in Soviet and post-Soviet law but his broader research interests extend to international economic law, law and development, constitutional law, human rights, and law and conflict. He is Chair of the SOAS Centre for Contemporary Central Asia and the Caucasus and has authored Law and the Making of the Soviet World: the Red Demiurge (Routledge 2014) and The Constitutional Systems of the Central Asian States: a Comparative and Contextual Analysis (Hart, 2016). He was recently awarded a major British Academy grant, under the Anti-Corruption Evidence programme, for a comparative project analysing the formal-constitutional/informal governance interface in post-Soviet Eurasia and East Africa.
